We are looking for 24 market managers, market vendors, or small scale food processors to take the very first MarketSafe course and provide us with feedback on the course content and delivery. Be a part of history!
The MarketSafe program was developed through a partnership between the BCAFM and FOODSAFE BC, with financial assistance of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the Investment Agriculture Foundation of BC. It is designed to increase awareness and knowledge of food safety and safe food handling procedures for farmers' market vendors, market managers, farm gate vendors, home kitchen small scale food processors, and others who may make, bake or produce food products for public consumption outside of regulated food service establishments.
The MarketSafe course is a five hour, interactive and participatory classroom course. Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a MarketSafe certificate from the BC Regional Health Authorities.
Toni Burton will lead the MarketSafe Training Launch. She is the Coordinator of the BC FOODSAFE Secretariat, managed by Camosun College. She has been a faculty member at the college for 17 years working in co-operative education, continuing education and contract training. Prior to coming to Camosun, Toni was a Master Trainer for the BC Ministry of Tourism where she assisted in the development, delivery and trainer training for the SuperHost programs; and the Manager of Industry Education & Training for Tourism Victoria. She holds a Master of Education degree in Workplace and Adult Learning and has an extensive background in teaching, training, curriculum development and educational leadership.
Market Managers and Boards of Directors from small, medium or large Farmers' Markets will find relevant information in the training sessions. Whether new or experienced, all members of your market management team are encouraged to take this opportunity to network and share your experiences and the challenges of managing a market or a non-profit society.
Research has found that one of the main reasons Farmers Markets fail to thrive is due to lack of skills and experience of Market Managers and Boards of Directors. With an eye on building a strong Farmers Market network across the province, the BCAFM encourages you to take part in this unique opportunity to build the skills necessary to increase the success of your Farmers' Market.
The Market Manager training will be delivered by Dr. Jennifer Horn of Vancouver Island University, who started and managed a Farmers' Market for several years and is now a producer and direct-farm marketer. Her research has focused on rural community development, small-scale agriculture, social capital and farmers. Her areas of expertise include: recreation, agriculture, research and development, tourism, sustainability, globalization, sociology and education.
