Farmers' markets operate in every type of community across British Columbia from cities and suburbs to rural communities. Markets vary in size and sophistication, from large sheltered public markets to a few farmers with their trucks parked next to each other in a parking lot or farm field. Now that's fresh!
Programs :: Selling at BC's Farmers' Markets
We interviewed 150 farmers and ranchers who sell at farmers' markets around BC. We asked them about how much they earn at the market, the size of their farm operations and what other marketing channels they use. See the two tables below for examples of what we learned. To find out more, please pick and choose from the Selling at BC Farmers' Markets pamphlet series below.

You can use this information to assess how well each type of market matches with your business goals and operations.
A survey conducted by the BCAFM in 2010 indicated that 70 out of 74 member farmers' markets were looking for additional farmer vendors. In response to this, we developed a series of 7 pamphlets profiling BC's farmers' markets, farmer vendors (by product category) and the customers who shop there.
The goal of these pamphlets is to provide farmers with sufficient information to be able to determine whether selling at a BC farmers' market will match with their business goals, and also help them choose which farmers' market is a good fit with their business.
The BC Association of Farmers' Markets wish to acknowledge the financial assistance of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the Investment Agriculture Foundation of BC for making this study of farmers selling at BC farmers' markets possible.
