Farmers' markets operate in every type of community across British Columbia from cities and suburbs to rural communities. Markets vary in size and sophistication, from large sheltered public markets to a few farmers with their trucks parked next to each other in a parking lot or farm field. Now that's fresh!
Managers' Corner / Vendors' Corner :: Insurance :: FAQs
The intent of this section is to provide a basic illustration and definition of the coverage offered by The Co-operators. Actual policy wordings of The Co-operators and the by-laws and Constitution of the BCAFM will prevail as they pertain to insurance and/or membership.
"Farmers' Market" means a market comprised exclusively (100%) of vendors who make, bake, grow or raise the products they sell, of which a majority of the vendors are selling farm products of British Columbia origin. These markets must be British Columbia non-profit organizations, whether incorporated or not, with at least 6 vendors, that operate for 2 or more hours per day for a minimum of 4 markets in a year;
However, farmers and vendors product must abide by the individual farmers market or the BCAFM definition, as well as all Federal, Provincial and local laws and legislation and regulations pertaining to the product(s) they sell. (i.e. inspection, food handling, etc.)
Non-members of a farmers' market are not covered and MUST BE informed that they are not covered or should not be selling at the market, or as is recommended, they should prove their own coverage to the local market if they intend to be vendors.
Yes, your Executive Officers and Directors are insured, but only with respect to their duties as your Directors and Officers (with respect to Property Damage or Bodily Injury loss or damage).
The Co-operators now has a proposal to the BCAFM to enable all members (as set out in the definition of a member) to provide Extended Medical/Dental/Life and Disability coverage to the members of the BCAFM, at a very reasonable cost, with no minimum participation.
The coverage is available to members and their families.
A Member market is insured year round, for activities pertaining to their market.
A member is insured while they are participating at a market and for activities associated directly with their market.
A Member market manager is insured year round, for activities pertaining to his/her employment (whether paid or not) as a market manager.
Only during market hours, or while specifically performing market related duties, (i.e. meetings etc.)
The fault of omission - all markets need to be informed of insurance coverage:
They also need to be informed of:
Farmers need to be told that they must retain the Farm or Business Insurance - the market insurance only covers them at the market. They are only insured as a vendor not as a farm at the market. This also applies to non-farming vendors.
