President's Report

Mary Forstbauer, President BCAFM

Summer is finally here and it's a busy time for everyone.

I'd like to acknowledge and thank all farmers' markets who joined the BCAFM in 2008. Your membership dollars are valuable to help sustain the Association and we encourage you to take full advantage of your membership fees by participating in programs and activities. Check out our new website and use your id and password to update your information.

Soon an Executive Director (ED) will be hired. This person will be part time and will be your first point of contact for all questions and concerns regarding farmers' market business. As the BCAFM President, I will be delegating many of my current tasks to the ED to allow me to narrow my focus and concentrate on providing effective leadership to enable the BCAFM to build capacity and become more self-reliant. (The volunteer time has been great these past two years and it is time for the BCAFM to move forward).

A summer student, Mark Mendoza, has been hired for July and August to help out with communication through mailings and email.

Over the past few years, Jaclyn Laic, Special Projects Coordinator, provided a helping hand to the BCAFM on projects including the Chefs' Shop Program and Eat BC! She also helped organize the AGM. Recently, Jaclyn decided to pursue other interests outside the BCAFM and we wish her well in her new endeavors!

We have an exciting new website. Visit www.bcfarmersmarket.org and check it out. There is an opportunity for you to use the "blog" and post your comments.

Take time to read what Paula has to say about the Farmers' Market Nutrition Coupon Program. We expanded from five markets to ten markets for the 2008 season. We have funding to expand to 20 markets in 2009. This means that ten new markets will be added to the program next year.

Remember to list your BC150 Feastival on the web page as we all "remember the past and celebrate the future in British Columbia."

We have been approved for two programs with Investment Agriculture. Soon you will hear more about the "Market Smart Food Safety" program and Director/Management workshop opportunities. We will be hiring two contractors to develop these programs.

Remember your board is a group of dedicated volunteers. We do our best to keep up with your enquires and requests and although we sometimes get busy with our farming and families, the BCAFM business gets missed for just a day or two.

It takes many hands and many good minds to build a strong Association. I wish to thank everyone involved with the BCAFM for their passion and energy.

Happy Selling!

BC 150 Years BC 150 YEARS Feastival Celebrations

BC150 Years Feastival Celebrations are well underway! The variety of events are amazing and include the highlighting of agricultural traditions at Surrey Urban Farmers' Market and selected YLFMS (Vancouver) Markets to chef-themed activities at Comox and Sun Peaks to cherry and strawberry-themed Feastivals at Peachland and Clearwater Farmers' Markets. Or, how about Cedar Farmers' Market's "Great Zucchini Grand Prix!"

I was fortunate to attend Oliver Country Market A-Fair's BC150 Years Feastival on Saturday June 21st. Thanks to the hard work of Jean Rattray and her crew, they successfully celebrated BC150 Years with a community party complete with speeches by Oliver's Mayor, dignitaries and yours truly. Plenty of local musical entertainment, balloons and a BC150 Years cake (seen here) helped show case the grand opening of their pavilion as the new home of their Farmers' Market.

We encourage you to send in photos and stories of your Feastival celebrations to share with your fellow markets and customers. And, please be sure to use the BC150 logo everywhere possible — still looking forward to seeing it on your website and newsletters! Check out whiterockfarmersmarket.ca for a perfect example of using the BC150 logo on the website.

Speaking of logos, it's great to see that many of you have been putting your BC150 toolkit templates to good use. Cheryl Scott of Peachland Farmers & Crafters Market provided us with some great feedback….

"Hi Sher, Yes, we received our package some time ago and it is truly amazing! The templates and info are so helpful and have really simplified our planning. Thanks so much for your help.
So glad you talked us into applying.
Keep up the good work,"

Cheryl Scott
Market Manager, Peachland Farmers & Crafters Market

I'm excited about the opportunity to visit many more markets in the upcoming weeks and to take part in your Feastival Celebrations.

Farmers' Market Nutrition and Coupon Project eat local, nutritious food

The BC Association of Farmers Markets (BCAFM) is pleased to announce the 2008 Farmers' Market Nutrition and Coupon Project. Building on the success of the 2007 pilot project, the Nutrition and Coupon Project has expanded to 10 Markets for 2008. The increase in participating Markets and Cooking & Skill Building programs will increase access to fresh, unprepared, locally grown fruits and vegetables to low-income pregnant women and families with children. The Cooking & Skill Building (CSB) programs also expand the awareness, use of and sales of BCAFM member farmers' markets.
