Selling at farmers' markets often gets you, the vendor, a larger cash return for your product than through wholesale marketing. Markets have plenty of anecdotal evidence of this, and a 2005 study conducted by the Department of Agricultural, Environmental and Development Economics at Ohio State University further confirms. There is also the pride and fun in selling to the people who enjoy eating your produce.
