Less meat, better quality

Slow Meat is meat raised humanely, naturally and with minimal impact on the environment. It is a fair deal for producers and processors. It is public understanding and appreciation of meat’s value. By eating less meat of better quality, we would create enormous benefits for our health, the farming system and the quality of the air, soil and water. (Slow Food USA)

Event details and schedule

As an addition to the BC Farmers' Markets conference, we are collaborating with Slow Food Canada and the River Market to host a Slow Meat Day. Meet your meat suppliers, talk to community organizations dedicated to better farming, and other supportive community members. Enter to win a $50 gift card at the Vancity booth to use at any restaurant in River Market.

Try various slow meat dishes from participating River Market restaurants with a Slow Meat Taster ticket. Participating restaurants and their slow meat taster dish include: 
  • ReUp BBQ - slow smoked heritage pork pasture-raised by Blue Sky Ranch with house-made BBQ sauce & creamy slaw)
  • Wild Rice Market Bistro - braised organic beef from Blue Goose Cattle Co. open face bao with pickled veg, scallion verde, horseradish aioli (one piece)

What sits at the center of what’s wrong with our food system? The imposition of industrial meat upon rural livelihoods, ecologies, animals, and diets. In short, the culture of confinement undermines the generation of wealth and the regeneration of ecosystems. Slow Meat is the global campaign for better meat, less meat. What can we practically do to promote the ranchers and multi-species farmers who are doing it right; and engage consumers to tackle the tyranny of cheap meat by paying for better, and learning to love less meat?
